About Nashville Unseen
The Nashville Scene has covered this city well for forty years. It also covers it from one direction. Nashville Unseen exists to add the half of the conversation that gets left out.
Nashville Unseen is an independent commentary publication covering Nashville and Tennessee politics and policy. We publish close reading and counterpoint: when a local story is framed from one side, we lay out the facts, credit what the original got right, and then make the case the coverage skipped. We also publish original reporting and dispatches from the ground when the moment calls for it.
Our perspective is center-right and locally grounded. We are skeptical of progressive overreach and of populist excess in equal measure. We care about Metro Council, the General Assembly, and the policy fights that actually shape Middle Tennessee neighborhoods, and we try to argue about them like neighbors rather than combatants.
How we work
We hold ourselves to a short set of rules, in plain view:
- Steelman before disagreeing. If a reader of the original piece cannot recognize their own argument in our summary, we have already failed them.
- No name-calling. Of writers, of officials, or of readers. We go hard at arguments, not at people.
- Local data over national talking points. Nashville and Tennessee numbers beat any out-of-state think-tank chart.
- Action over outrage. Most pieces end with something a reader can actually do: a meeting to attend, a question to ask, a representative to call.
- Corrections in the open. When we get something wrong, we fix it on the page and say so.
- Independent and unaffiliated. No party, candidate, PAC, or publication owns us.
Our full editorial standards and corrections policy are published on their own page: Editorial Standards & Corrections.
